With the fence completed, we really just had the finish to make a decision about. The fence and the gate are built out of cedar wood through and through, so technically we wouldn’t have to do anything because cedar is naturally weather resistant.

A while ago, I was browsing the Farmer’s market like usual and I came upon the mushroom stand with this sign:

Truffles! I always wanted to cook with truffles, make truffle pasta, truffle butter and all that.

The fence is now done! It’s complete, it’s private and our backyard is a million times more useful and comfortable to spend time in than it was before the fence.

When we built the fence we left a section in the back open. Why? Well, since we have an alley street in the back, we wanted to put a large gate back there so we would have the option of parking a car in the back of the shed at some point. In particular, we thought this would make a really nice home for our -66 Mustang which we work on from time to time, and that we wouldn’t mind restoring completely whenever our housing projects slow down a bit…. So in order to be able to drive a car back there, we needed a large gate that would provide a nice wide opening.

I love thinking about old houses, and the environment that people lived in, in the past. Isn’t it fascinating to look at an old
house and imagine people living in that space throughout the age of that house! Isn’t it weird to think of the often-times large families that once occupied those rooms and how nowadays people in the western world wouldn’t even imagine living as cramped as they once did.

So, once we had built the first stretch of fence, we still had the second part left to do. It seemed like a better idea to complete the part of the fence facing the street first, to instantly get some more privacy and to get an idea of what it would look like, before starting the other side.

So here we have the vinyl fence from that side resting on our new fence!

We’re moving along with the fence alright! However taking the old one down, and getting all the cement out of the holes has been annoying. In contrast, putting down posts and building a new fence hasn’t been nearly as demanding, both in terms of physical effort as well as time spent.

We spend a lot of time in our carport; building stuff, sometimes eating dinner out there and just hanging out. So, in order to make this area a little more private we were thinking of building some kind of structure that would block this area off a bit from the street and the neighbors who live right by us. Since we need to be able to open up this area from time to time, whether to park a car, or bring in wood or other things, we needed to consider that aspect.
